Always Doing Things My Way and Over Thinking are Foolish- why do we do it?
So, team, this post was inspired by a conversation with my wife. And before I get a bunch of estrogen defense comments I will say this, my wife is awesome, she is also several months pregnant(with our third child) and overworking herself(school teacher).
so tonight was one of those normal overworking nights, she is getting her things together for school the next day(it is college theme month and they are taking the art room and making it a dorm room, cool huh) and she wants to take the camera in to school to take some pictures.
I find the camera for her and casually remind her that she should pack an extra set of batteries.( who wants- {insert digital device here}- running out of juice when you need it. That stinks, doesn’t it?)
So she is considering whether or not to pack them… for an entire minute. I notice and say,” just pack the extra batteries, you could have already done it in the time you are considering the need for them. It made perfect sense but she resisted the idea of following the advise. She wanted to do it her way.
Always Doing Things My Way and Over thinking are foolish- why not “do” something?
That got me to thinking, I need to follow my own advise. In fact many of us are over thinking strategies, training or what products to buy, it is foolish. We get in this second guessing
ourselves loop. It keeps us going around and around like some giant hamster in a wheel. A computer in a loop.
Hamsters- Computers-Hamster computers, hmmm, not something I want to identify with, how about you?
So when I notice that I am in the same place that I was in 10 minutes ago. I take a deep breathe in and out and decide to do something, even if it is to get a glass of water. Just go, do it. My body will like it and my brain will too. The longer I stagnate the more normal it will seem, the more time I spend “doing” the more normal it will seem. The latter sounds way better.
Having a fall back to when you get stuck on “the indecision wheel” is a good plan. For example I use to go get something to drink or eat when I was stuck. BAD PLAN. That was foolish, not a good one to use as a backup unless you get a drink and it is water. A person can gain a lot of weight that way(why are you looking at me?).
SO instead pick something that would be beneficial and productive, an accomplishment, such as, getting a new back link for an article, signing up and posting to a new blog, or just churning through those emails. Not checking to see if something new is in your email, but actually doing something. Checking an inbox, when done too often, reminds me of checking a site’s ranking to see if it moved in the past hour.
Always Doing Things My Way and Over thinking are foolish- it gets easier
so I took three breaks, got a glass of water each time(I am on my way to being well hydrated!) and I am tying up this post. Overall, I am getting better at this ” doing” instead of over thinking but I definitely need to work on not always doing things my way.
One of the ways I have been working towards that change is modeling after mentors and trainers. I start this modeling by assuming( against my better judgement) that some people that are extremely successful have a better system than I do.
Then I take a good look at them and find out why I should do their system instead of mine. Well, I am. I am writing this post from a blog platform, a sweet one at that, it has the ranking and clout I need to get my message out there as a rookie blogger.
Enough said, I am going to get another tasty glass of water and hit publish
Good luck to you all!
